Family Dog Training: Beginning training for adolescent and adult dogs includes attention training, sit, down, stand, stay, controlled walking, teaching your dog to come and more. The first day of class is without dogs so that we can teach you a little bit about how dogs learn and how to use this information to make your dog training more effective. Dogs should be at least 5 months of age to enroll in this class. Dogs must be able to be handled by a friendly stranger and be able to work around other dogs and people on leash. This class is also offered using clicker training. 6 one-hour sessions. Puppy Kindergarten: Beginning puppy training includes socialization with people and other dogs plus beginning obedience exercises geared toward the young dog, including attention training, sit, down, stay, controlled walking, and come. This class is geared towards problem prevention by showing you how to encourage good behaviors in your puppy right from the start. This is the most important class that you and your dog will ever take. Puppies must be between 10 and 19 weeks of age to attend. 6 one-hour sessions. Puppy Headstart: This is a one-time class for you and your new puppy. We’ll cover all of the basics to get you and your new companion off to the right start: housebreaking, nipping, chewing, crate training, grooming, socialization, and more. We’ll provide structured socialization and play time, which is critical to the development of a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppies must be between 10 and 19 weeks to attend. This class promises to be fun and informative for the whole family. 1 one-hour session. Canine Good Citizen: The Canine Good Citizen test was started by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to reward dogs who have good manners in the home and community. The class consists of two parts. During the first 4 weeks of class, we will prepare for the test which consists of ten exercises: Accepting a friendly stranger Sitting politely for petting (no jumping) Allowing grooming Out for a walk on a loose leash Walking politely through a crowd Sit and down on command and stay Coming when called Behaving politely around other dogs Reaction to distractions Supervised separation from handler The last week of class, we will administer the Canine Good Citizen Test. Dogs who pass will receive a certificate from the AKC. This is a wonderful class for people who want to reinforce good manners in their dogs and also for people who are considering therapy dog work with their animals. The program is open to mixed-breed and purebred dogs alike. Pre-requisite: Family Dog Training or equivalent. 5 one-hour sessions. Feisty Fido: Does your dog growl, lunge, or bark at other dogs when she walks on leash? Do you feel uncomfortable walking your dog because you’re worried that she’ll become “reactive” if she sees another dog? Do you have a difficult time getting your dog to calm down on leash after she sees another dog? If you answered “YES” to any of these questions, then our Feisty Fido class may be appropriate for you and your dog. This is a specialized class that will teach you how to manage and treat on-leash reactivity. This class is not appropriate for dogs who are aggressive to people or for dogs who only show dog-to-dog aggression when they’re off leash. 7 one-hour sessions; first week is educational only (no dogs). Class size is limited to 6 dogs. |
