All classes are taught using positive, reward-based methods that help dogs to learn without fear. Research has shown (see Dog Science News) that dogs who are trained using positive methods may be less likely to develop behavioral problems in the future. Good dog training enhances communication and builds a relationship between a dog and his or her person.

To register for class, please fill out the REGISTRATION FORM and mail it to the address on the form along with your check. We keep class sizes small (no more than 8 dog-handler teams) so everyone gets plenty of individual attention. The only way to ensure a place in the class is to mail in your registration materials before classes fill.

Family Dog Training I (Beginners)

This beginner’s class focuses on teach manners and obedience using fun, positive, and motivational methods grounded in the science of animal learning.  Training will focus on improving communication with your dog and developing a strong relationship.  Your dog will learn to pay attention to you, and to sit, down, and stay on request.  You’ll also learn how to teach your dog to come when called, walk on leash without pulling, greet people without jumping, and more.  The first class is without dogs so that we can teach you about how dogs learn and how to make your training most effective.  Enrollment includes a copy of the training book written by Dr. Ward, Relationship Training for a Well-Behaved Dog .

Frequency & Duration: 1 hour/week for 6 weeks

Course Pre-requisites:  Dogs must be able to be handled by a friendly stranger and be able to work around other dogs and people on leash.  Dogs should be at least 5 months of age to enroll.

Starts When: September 8th through October 13th (Wednesdays) from 6-7pm.

Location: Canine Sports and Recreation Center, 7275 Joy Road, Dexter, Michigan.
